Hey Marc! I know those aren't quick release bracelets, but it looks like it's easier than most bracelets to remove, like I could use two springbar tools at the same time to compress that springbar and release it. Is that the case?

The jdm white dial caught my attention. But, I like it less as time goes by. I have 7.5 inch wrists and find 38mm with a thin case more comfortable. I'll just wear 2 watches during my flights.

Around 7 years ago I got a new Sarb 033 for $303. And honestly, you can get a watch with better quality, finishing and qc from the better Chinese brands these days. And of course the Sarb is now going for double what I bought it for. (The Sarb now lives in my junk drawer, having a taken a tiny knock which wrecked the movement.)

i have seiko skx007j which i purchased 7 years back from seiko dealer. watch is keeping time with +9sec accuracy. do i have to get it serviced? or keep it using until it loses time more than 20sec.

Just looked on Amazon and got the snk807 for 52.99 back in 2015.

I want the MOP dial, but I already have the black dial 43mm Essence. The only problem with these is resale value. It is hard to sell these. If it were easier I would buy the MOP dial with gold hands right now. Formex makes an incredible watch. I have an Omega Aqua Terra, and this is just as good for a third the price.

Is Mark saying, that the whole grey market would buy Seiko watches for $400 and sell for $250 - and that model helped them stay in the business for two decades?

They will no longer build an affordable watches because they have a tons of movements which will be creatd for microbrands and they are cheap. And that Seiko know exactly that people will build a mod watches to represent the original one.

Great video and excellent points. I own more Seiko watches (4) than any other brand but the issue I have is the pricing in different regions. I've only purchased 1 Seiko in Finland (Seiko Turtle discounted by 48%) and rest have come from either Singapore (grey market) or direct from Japan (from AD) and I saved myself +30% compared to price in Finland (also this considers import taxes I have to pay). Watch prices just seem to be much higher in Europe and that's not down to differences due to inflation or currency fluctuations. In addition, I think many people are still watching their outgoings after the pandemic so seeing less Seiko bargains/grey market offers does give the perception of higher prices plus microbrands and Chinese brands have such good value propositions that they are hard to ignore for anyone on a budget. And one other point I've just remembered is regarding QC with Seiko. I think there QC tolerances are a bit high. I think it's something like dials can be misaligned by up to 1.5 degrees but that really is noticeable at the extreme and hence people see they are getting less (poorer quality) for their money. For me I can live with a small misalignment but I've had '(and returned) a Seiko King Turtle where chapter ring, dial and cyclops have all be misaligned/wonky.

My SNK same navy blue model in the video was produced way back in 2005, as I purchased it xmas 2005 and the six digit code was printed on the see through case back not etched into the metal like here. Movement is 7S26A.

People, there's no other brand that does dials like Seiko at Seiko prices. Not one. You wanna go buy some random microbrand, go for it. A seiko is seiko, a cartier is cartier, a rolex is rolex. A Seagull isn't any of those. Same thing happens with guitars - people are always proud about buying a Fender or Gibson alternative - except that if you only want a fender or a gibson, there's no alternative just like our favourite watch brands.

And I thought I knew everything about mechanical watch and clock movements. 😂 I just saw one of these on sale here in the UK on a famous antiques TV show. After a very brief description of what it did, my appetite for more information was whetted. Thanks for the great comprehensive introduction to these clocks. Not sure if owning one is for me, to be honest. I see the advantage and disadvantage of ownership. Repairing and to a degree, servicing this clock is beyond the scope of most amateur or hobbyist watch makers.

It's honestly frustrating that all of the aftermarket bracelets with solid endlinks for the SKX have male endlinks. The whole beauty of that watch is the short lug to lug. If you have a below average wrist these are actually less comfortable than the original bracelet.

I love it when people justify the higher price with “Name Recognition”. “Seiko” is why I would be reluctant to pay a higher price. Unless it matched micro brand value. Why would I spend more, when I know they can do it for way less than a micro brand?

'Heritage' is a very expensive consideration when buying a watch; if you fall for it you're going to pay a massive premium. The Seiko/Steeldive Willard comparison is a great example of this. At least you'll know that your money has made some marketing people very happy... 🙂

Quality of Seiko's is lagging behind the price increase. Those 4R/NH35 movements are a poor investment in the long run. Poorly regulated, nightmarish to regulate after a while...
